SUITABLY humble (despite the Rod Stewart hairstyle), David handed the Jubilee baton to the Queen at the opening of the Commonwealth Games in 2002. By his side was Kirsty Howard from Manchester, who was born with a rare heart defect. Kirsty met David the previous year when she was a mascot in a World Cup qualifier and developed a tender relationship with her football hero. She died in 2015, aged 20.
