Madonna: I was told I was unfit to adopt
MADONNA has revealed she was once told by an adoption judge that she was unfit to raise children.
The singer’s comments came as she returned to her adopted son and daughters’ native country of Malawi to open its first paediatric surgery and intensive care centre. She was joined by twins Esther and Stella, four, David, 11, and 11-year- old Mercy James, who appeared less than impressed by the ceremony despite the centre being named after her.
Madonna said the remarks came during her three-year battle for Mercy, adding: ‘The judge who was presiding said no. I was recently divorced [from Guy Ritchie], and she informed me, as a divorced woman, I was not fit to raise children and Mercy James was better off in an orphanage.’
Malawi’s supreme court overturned the ruling in 2009. Madonna also has two biological children Lourdes, 20, and Rocco, 16.
