Deluded self-entitlement
I AgREE with Dominic Lawson that Jeremy Corbyn’s young supporters think they’re entitled to anything they want (Mail).
They can’t have studied history, taxation or house buying. I remember when the basic rate of income tax started at 33p in the pound with varying rates of up to 83 per cent when Labour Chancellor Denis Healey threatened to tax the wealthy until the pips squeaked.
Personal allowances were also lower, while mortgage interest rates went up to double figures.
My wife and I worked seven days a week to save up a deposit and, because of difficult circumstances, we ended up paying a mortgage for more than 50 years.
It is notable that today’s young people seem to have enough spare cash for smartphones, tablet computers and nights out.
