Cilic eyes up second Slam

- NICK HARRIS on Court No 1

The Big Four have won 44 of the last 49 men’s Grand Slam singles titles but now Marin Cilic has the chance to cement his place in the ‘Next Three’ of this era. In defeating Gilles Muller, conqueror of Nadal in the fourth round, the 28-year-old Croat has already broken new ground as he will contest his first semi-final here in his 11th appearance. he also has the chance to become the second man other than Roger Federer, Rafa Nadal, Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray in 13 years to win more than one Slam title. Stan Wawrinka has three, Juan Martin del Potro and Cilic one apiece. Cilic, who beat Muller 3-6, 7-6, 7-5, 5-7, 6-1, said: ‘Gilles was serving unbelievable. It was a hard-fought battle, with just a couple of points deciding the match, but I kept my cool.’ Cilic came back from a set down to win the next two. Muller, the world No 16 from Luxembourg, rallied with the type of serve-volley brilliance that beat Nadal but Cilic broke him in the opening game of the fifth set and marched to the last four. And maybe closer to the Big Four.
