1968 Billie Jean King (USA) bt Ann Jones 4-6, 7-5, 6-2 King came back from a set down and went on to win the third of her six Wimbledon singles titles. 1969 Ann Jones bt Margaret Court (Aus) 10-12, 6-3, 6-2 After losing an epic first set, Jones upset the No 1 seed. In the final, Jones took revenge on Billie Jean King to win her third major title and her first at Wimbledon. 1974 Olga Morozova (USSR) bt Virginia Wade 1-6, 7-5, 6-4 Wade reached the last four without dropping a set before Morozova stormed back. She lost in the final to Chris Evert. * In the Open era 1976 Evonne Cawley (Aus) bt Virginia Wade 6-1, 6-2 Again Wade cruised to the semifinals but she could not handle Cawley, who lost the final to Evert. 1977 Virginia Wade bt Chris Evert (USA) 6-2, 4-6, 6-1 Wade beat the defending champion and No 1 seed before winning the final against Holland’s Betty Stove. 1977 Betty Stove (Hol) bt Sue Barker 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 Barker called this match her ‘worst memory’ as it denied Wimbledon an all-British women’s final. 1978 Chris Evert (USA) bt Virginia Wade 8-6, 6-2 Defending champion Wade went down in straight sets. Evert lost to Martina Navratilov­a in the final.
