EMMELINE PANKHURST (1858-1928). The women’s suffrage leader (right) born in Moss Side, Manchester, was arrested seven times, including once for slapping a policeman. She died just weeks before the Bill giving women equal voting rights with men (at the age of 21) became law in July 1928.

GERALD FORD (1913-2006). The 38th u.S. president replaced Richard nixon after he resigned. As president, he survived two assassinat­ion attempts: the first by a Charles Manson cult member, Lynette Fromme, in September 1975; the second 17 days later by a mentally unstable former FBI informant, Sarah Jane Moore. Both women served more than 30 years before being paroled.
