Self-seeking MPs

-

I AGREE with Dominic Sandbrook that today’s politicians are the least talented and public spirited (Mail). I would add that they are also not fit for purpose.

In the old days, MPs were elected when they had demonstrated they could contribute to the good of the country. They were not out for themselves, seeking publicity and fiddling their expenses.

Sensible people are not taken in by the antics of clowns, unlike the youngsters who were bamboozled to vote for Jeremy Corbyn.

Abolishing university fees is a pathetic bribe when so few students are successful enough to start repaying what they owe. And too many go to university studying useless subjects. They would do far better becoming apprentices, which is the German system for nonacademic youngsters.

Such teenagers do not think the world owes them a living, unlike some of our youngsters, who have a great sense of entitlement.

Theresa May is sensible and hardworking. I hope all the backbiting and plotting will not interfere with her efforts to secure a successful and smooth Brexit.

SHIELA PECZENIK, Andover, Hants. DOMINIC SANDBROOK forgot one or two things in his paean of praise to the Thirties National government.

Neglecting the Forces, even slashing their wages, which led to the Invergordon Mutiny of 1931; the cruel, unfeeling means test; and appeasement. The Budget should not be balanced by attacking the poor or the Armed Forces.
