OH YES, I remember the World War II doodlebugs, or flying bombs (Peterborough).

One in particular I shall never forget. My first job after leaving school was with Southern Railway, whose head office was evacuated to the old Deepdene Hotel in Dorking, Surrey.

From my office window I could see my home. A doodlebug passed over, making the usual racket, then stopped and fell behind the house.

Knowing my mother was on her own, I was permitted to race back on my bike to make sure she was all right.

She had taken shelter in the understairs cupboard and was OK. The bomb had fallen on waste ground behind the house, causing damage to properties, but luckily no one was hurt. I then returned to work. I would have been about 15 years old at the time.
