A vicious cycle! I used Facebook to steal bike back from thief after police did nothing

‘I pedalled as fast as I could’

A CYCLIST pulled off the perfect revenge when she snatched her bike back from the thief who had stolen it.

Just hours after the chained-up bike was taken, Jenni Morton-Humphreys arranged to meet the crook who was selling it on Facebook – despite police warning her against it.

And in a beautifully executed heist, the 30-year-old persuaded the man to let her take it on a ‘test drive’ – before pedalling off into the distance.

Miss Morton-Humphreys said her bike was stolen from Bristol city centre when someone cut through the lock.

Worried the blue Cube bike would be sold quickly, she pleaded for help on the Bristol Cycling Group Facebook page. She was contacted by a fellow cyclist who found it for sale online at £95 – a Cube bike can cost up to £1,500 – and together they plotted its return by pretending to want to buy it.

Miss Morton-Humphreys told the police what she planned but they warned the plan could be risky and did not help her. Undeterred, she went ahead as a friend watched out for her and left the thief dumbfounded on a street corner.

She said: ‘I wobbled off a bit on the bike and then when I was a couple of yards away I just went for it. I pedalled as fast as I could.’ And her day was made when she found the hapless criminal had even fixed the front light for her.
