WHEN did tabbies earn their stripes? After examining DNA from long- dead felines, scientists have the answer. According to the journal Nature Ecology And Evolution, cats with stripes or swirls only developed in the Middle Ages. Belgian academics, using DNA from 350 felines, found that blotched tabby patterns are only seen on house cats, and became common in the 19th century.
