LETTERS What’s right for Charlie?

-

IN A nation that seems to have lost its moral compass when it comes to pro-life issues, the parents of Charlie Gard are a breath of fresh air. Their great crime seems to be that they love Charlie more than life itself. How dare Great Ormond Street Hospital deny their right to have him treated by American doctors.

If they were taking him to be seen by a snake oil salesman, I would understand the court’s heavy-handed approach, but they have raised enough money, not to mention the goodwill of a Pope and a President, to have him treated by the world’s experts in Charlie’s condition. The longer this sorry saga drags on, the hospital will be seen to have acted in a callous and insensitive way, which will damage its reputation.

SuE SAXoN, Thornton-Cleveleys, Lancs. SHOULD the parents of baby Charlie be careful what they wish for?

I shed a tear listening to a caller to Radio 4’s Any Answers relate how she battled for the life of her severely disabled baby boy to be saved.

Her son is now a teenager, no longer on life support, and so she cannot let him go, despite him being conscious of nothing but relentless pain. Reflecting on her decision to keep her son alive, she admits: ‘We did it for us, not for him.’
