Cockroft leads way for GB’s golden trio
GREAT Britain’s golden girls are celebrating as Hannah Cockroft, Sophie Kamlish and Olivia Breen ensured a hat-trick of triumphs at the World Para-Athletics Championships last night.
It’s two down, one to go in Cockroft’s treble quest as she broke the World Championship record with a time of 2min 01sec in the T34 800m final.
Kamlish then stormed to success in the women’s 100m T44 final and Breen won gold in the T38 long jump.
There was disappointment for Richard Whitehead as he only took bronze in the T42 100m final. Whitehead then launched a blistering attack on the International Paralympic Committee and Australian rival Scott Reardon.
Whitehead wants to compete in the T42 100m final at Tokyo 2020. In Rio, the race was open to single and double leg amputees but in Tokyo the latter will be excluded as some athletes — such as Australian single- amputee Reardon — believe it is ‘dangerous’.
Whitehead said: ‘Paralympic sport needs to be inclusive and not isolating individuals. I will only have the 200m to run in Tokyo, which is ridiculous.
‘All my life I have been fighting against the system.’
