FRANKIE Fredericks, the former Namibian sprinter and now IAAF council member, has been suspended while he is investigat­ed for alleged corruption connected to the award of the 2016 Olympic hosting vote. Fredericks insists he is innocent and he intends to appeal. The four-time Olympic medallist is also being investigat­ed over payments from Papa Massata Diack, son of ex-IAAF president Lamine Diack, on the day Rio was awarded the 2016 Olympics.

GREAT BRITAIN pair Tom Daley (above) and Daniel Goodfellow had to settle for fourth place in the men’s 10 metres synchronis­ed platform final at the World Championsh­ips in Budapest. China claimed gold, Russia silver and bronze went to Germany.

LIVERPOOL’S Echo Arena will host this year’s BBC Sports Personalit­y of the Year awards. The BBC announced that the ceremony on Sunday, December 17, would be returning to Merseyside for the first time since 2008, when the Echo Arena hosted the event shortly after opening. The SPOTY award was first awarded in 1954 and heavyweigh­t world champion Anthony Joshua is currently favourite to win the 2017 edition.
