Three Rivers win thriller

SHARON WARRINGTON and Joanna Stentiford won an exhausting four-hole sudden-death play-off to send former champions Three Rivers into the sixth round of the Daily Mail Foursomes. They both had taken part in their club championships the day before, which meant the pair ended up playing a gruelling 58 holes in 41 hours at their Essex club. They were two up at the 16th, but Elaine Cochrane and Tina Hollyoake from Manor of Groves fought back with a late charge which included a birdie at the 17th to tie the match. Three Rivers finally emerged victorious at the par-five 22nd after their opponents found a pond and a bunker before conceding. A relieved Warrington, who plays off 24, said: ‘It’s great when it is close like that. I think it brings out the best in people. It was testing golf. We were shattered by the time we got home, but we loved it.’
