So, why do they win a jug?

- JAMES RESTALL

ThE Open champions are presented with the Golf Champion Trophy, better known as the Claret Jug. here is the lowdown on this famous prize... WHY IS IT CALLED THE CLARET JUG? The trophy is a silver claret jug (right), similar to those used to serve red wine in the 19th century. WHAT DID CHAMPIONS WIN BEFORE THE JUG? The first winners won the Challenge Belt. young Tom Morris was allowed to keep the belt after his third successive win in 1870, so three host clubs chipped in £10 each for a new trophy — the Jug. WHEN WAS IT FIRST AWARDED? The Jug was not ready when Morris won in 1872, so he was given a medal inscribed with ‘The Golf Champion Trophy’. Tom kidd was presented the trophy the following year but Morris’s name was the first to be inscribed. HOW BIG IS IT? The Jug is 20 inches tall and six wide. It is not that heavy, either, containing just 5lb 6oz of silver. CAN THE CHAMPION TAKE IT HOME? since 1928, champions have been presented with a replica which they can keep for a year. They can also keep a threequarter sized version, believed to cost £15,000. The Royal and Ancient Golf Club look after the original.
