Support your central vision

EYE health is a growing concern in the UK. The NHS reports that age- related macular degeneration (AMD) is emerging as Britain’s fastest growing health problem, with more than half of those aged 40 to 69 affected.

Unfortunately, the problem is worsening as we live longer and fuller lives.

But now it has been revealed that the marigold flower, a member of the sunflower family, may hold a secret of boosting key nutrients in our eyes.

The brightly coloured petals of the marigold have been shown to contain high concentrations of lutein and zeaxanthin, ingredients naturally found in the macula.

The macula is a small and highly sensitive film located at the centre of the retina at the back of the eye. It is responsible for helping us distinguish fine detail in the central area of our vision.

It can be difficult to replenish lutein and zeaxanthin levels through diet alone. While found in some green leafy vegetables, such as kale and dandelion leaves, they can be poorly absorbed or not eaten in sufficient quantity.

That could be about to change with the launch of a new supplement that combines lutein and zeaxanthin with lycopene and zinc, to help maintain normal vision. While lutein and zeaxanthin supplements already exist, the new formulation also includes a tomato extract containing lycopene, which plays a crucial role in this patented formulation, boosting potency.

The lycopene ensures that optimal levels of lutein and zeaxanthin are delivered to the macula, by acting as a sacrificial carrier, ensuring the protection of the other active ingredients from oxidation, which could reduce benefits.

Alf Lindberg, scientific advisor to the Cambridge company that makes the new supplement, says: ‘We are very excited about the launch. The unique delivery system that ensures the lutein and zeaxanthin are delivered to the macula is what grabbed our attention and the effects of this have been supported by clinical trials.’

Studies have led to a significant increase in the use of supplements for AMD, but what remains paramount is ensuring that the key ingredients are safely delivered to the back of the eye.
