PERFECT 10 FOR HANNAH
Cockroft’s glory takes titles into double figures
HANNAH COCKROFT sealed her version of La Decima last night with a 10th title at the World Para Athletics Championships — then went back to bed to nurse a cold.
The 24-year- old Brit had never lost a race at a major championship heading into her T34 400metres final and duly secured gold in 58.29sec.
It completed a hat- trick for Cockroft this week after she won the 100m and 800m finals with world record and championship record times respectively. It was an excellent night for Britain as Georgina Hermitage won gold in the T37 400m in a world record time of 1:00.29.
Cockroft revealed: ‘ I’m not 100 per cent right now. I’m absolutely full of cold. I wasn’t feeling great. I’ve been in bed all day, just trying to get enough energy to get through this race. I just had to get my head down and focus on what I had to do.’
Asked how she would celebrate, Cockroft said: ‘A good long sleep. I’ve got to get drug-tested first and I’ve got to get up for the medal ceremony in the morning now.’ At London 2012, Cockroft announced herself to the world with double gold. Five years on, Hurricane Hannah is storming on.
