Jose ‘100 per cent’ De Gea will stay

- CHRIS WHEELER reports from Santa Clara, California

JOSE MOURINHO has given a ‘100 per cent guarantee’ that David de Gea will stay at Manchester United next season, after revealing that Real Madrid have cooled their interest in Spain’s goalkeeper. Mourinho confirmed talks took place between the clubs and he did not want to keep De Gea against his wishes. But he said Real walked away from a potential £60million deal, leaving De Gea unhappy with the Spanish giants and determined to focus on his Old Trafford career. Speaking before the friendly between the clubs in Santa Clara, California, late last night, Mourinho said: ‘I can guarantee that he’s not going this season. My feeling is it will be very difficult for him to go. Because he’s a very honest boy, very straight. ‘He was contacted for a long time. The club was closed, then we open because I don’t like to stop players to go. ‘So we open it and then (Real) decided to close and I don’t think the feeling from (De Gea) towards them is very good.’ Mourinho warned De Gea that he faces competition from Sergio Romero for the first-choice keeper’s position.
