Tesco takes on Amazon with same-day delivery

- By Sean Poulter Consumer Affairs Editor

TESCO will roll out same-day grocery delivery for the first time nationwide as it battles the rise of Amazon.

Customers ordering before 1pm will be able to get their food after 7pm on the same evening from 300 stores.

Britain’s biggest supermarket says the service will be available from Shetland to Cornwall. It will carry a £3 to £8 fee but will be free for a period to customers signed up to Tesco’s online membership scheme, Delivery Saver.

Tesco has been forced to offer sameday delivery to fight off a challenge from Amazon, which offers it through its Ama- zonFresh and Prime services in London. Currently Tesco only offers same-day delivery in London and the South East. Sainsbury’s and Ocado are also expected to roll out the service nationwide.

Tesco’s online managing director Adrian Letts said: ‘Customers tell us they like getting their shopping delivered quickly and conveniently.

‘With our same-day delivery service they can now order by lunch to get their shopping for their evening meal.’
