CLASSY WATERS CHASING TITLE SURGE

FORMeR Cumbria golf champion Greg Waters moved one step closer to returning to the finals of The Daily Mail Foursomes after storming into the sixth round. It has been 11 years since Waters, 53, got to the closing stages with Carlisle and he is on the charge once more. Now, he is just two wins from October’s finale at Marriott st Pierre with partner Tony armstrong. ‘To go away and win is always a good result,’ said Waters, after three birdies on route to a 4&2 victory at Dumfries & County. ‘For anybody who has got this far the finals are the goal.’ Waters was once of Cumbria’s top players, winning the county title three times. his late father, Paddy, was a keen golfer who played football for Preston North end — alongside sir Tom Finney. he introduced his son to the sport and caddied for him on occasions. But despite his past success, Waters insists he will take nothing for granted. he said: ‘You take each round at a time. We’ll see what we come up against.’
