MCC snub stars’ families

- PAUL NEWMAN

THE MCC refused to let families join England players in the Long Room of the Lord’s pavilion to celebrate their World Cup win on Sunday — and instead left them out in the rain. And members also attracted criticism for failing to support the match in large numbers, leaving pavilion benches empty while the rest of Lord’s was virtually full. ‘The families had been allowed on to the playing area to form a guard of honour for the players,’ said an MCC spokesman. ‘There just wasn’t room in the Long Room to let them all in because there was so many of them. They weren’t in the rain for long and the players were happy to join them elsewhere at Lord’s.’ Ian Shrubsole, father of player of the match Anya, told

Sportsmail that families were happy to stay outside. He said: ‘Everybody could not have treated us any better and helped us have a special day.’
