Levy proud to keep the Spurs purse strings tight

- JACK GAUGHAN reports from New York

DANIEL LEVY has launched a passionate defence of Tottenham’s meagre transfer business and claimed other Premier League bosses are playing an unsustainable game with their exorbitant spending. Spurs are the only top-flight club not to have signed fresh blood this summer as their rivals lavish millions. And Levy dismissed suggestions that was down to the £800million rebuilding of White Hart Lane. ‘Unless we find a player who would make a difference, Mauricio Pochettino would rather give one of our academy players a chance, regardless of the financing of the stadium,’ said Levy. ‘When you’re building a stadium of this magnitude, it all has to be privately financed. There’s no state help. It is a challenge and we have to find the right balance.’ Spurs have kept much the same squad that finished second to Chelsea last season, with only right back Kyle Walker leaving for Manchester City for £54m. ‘We don’t have to spend £30m, £40m on a player and obviously that home-grown player has an affinity,’ Levy said. ‘That’s what the fans want to see. That’s why people love Harry Kane and sing that he’s one of our own.’ And Levy says his counterparts at rival clubs cannot maintain their colossal outlays. ‘My view is that the prices being paid are totally unsustainable,’ he added. ‘You know, if somebody is spending £200m more than they’re earning, then it catches up with you.’ Meanwhile, Spurs are keen on Hoffenheim’s 22-year-old defender Jeremy Toljan.
