SMITH was jailed for eight months in 2014 after being sentenced, along with fellow carers Katie Cairns, Carol Ann Moore and Gemma Pearson, for abusing residents at Hillcroft nursing home in Slyne-with-Hest, near Lancaster.

Eight residents in their 70s and 80s were bullied and tormented, under the assumption that they would have no memory of the abuse.

Preston Crown Court heard that one man had his foot stamped on deliberately and another was nearly tipped out of his wheelchair. Other residents had bean bags and balls thrown at their heads ‘for entertainment’.
