Dodgy tradesmen

WHILE not suggesting that all the self -employed are tax avoiders, during my recent house renovation, the plumber, tiler and decorator all wanted cash, while the kitchen fitter wanted payment by cheque and cash.

None issued receipts. Though I agree the fat cats should pay their share, I suspect the amount of tax avoided may be greater among the thousands of one-man traders. J. BuTTeRWORTH,
