Go solo and find out what you’re made of

- LINDA WHITNEY

THE skills picked up in y o ur business career could one day help you start a firm of your own.

Sandra Murphy spent 25 years working in small and mediumsized enterprises ( SMEs), including roles in finance and operations, marketing and events, but decided she wanted more.

‘ Eventually, I realised I was largely involved with day-to -day firefighting, rather than being able to step back and plan strategically,’ says Sandra, 54, from Brighton.

‘I wanted a more challenging way of working , where I could share my knowledge and experience with other business owners. Simply getting a new job would not be enough.’

She decided to invest in a Business Doctors franchise, which offers SMEs hands-on support.

‘I chose the franchise route because of the support from head office and the other franchisees,’ says Sandra. ‘I work better as a team player, and was concerned about the loneliness of running a business on my own.

‘This way, I can have my own business, while still having people around me.’

Matthew Levington, co - franchisor at Business Doctors, says: ‘Our franchisees typically have more than 20 years’ business experience, either with SMEs, big corporates or as entrepreneurs.

‘Most have never worked in coaching, consulting or business support before. W e value their transferable skills and top them up with intensive training .’ The franchise investment is £37,500.

Andy Myers, 47, uses the skills he gained from running his own chartered accountancy practice to set up a T ransworld Business Advisors (TBA) franchise along - side it. He offers SME owners advice when they want to dispose of their businesses.

‘My background as an owner/ manager adds to my credibility and means I understand clients’ concerns,’ says Andy.

TBA UK chairman Michael Ziff says: ‘Some previous business knowledge is helpful, but isn ’t essential for our franchisees, because we offer training and support. More important for us is the right attitude, dedication and commitment to succeed.’

The investment is £45,000. Business Doctors: 01774 833 778 and TBA: 020 7034 7552.
