According to a study, an astonishing 38 per cent of UK adults – some 20million of us – are not getting enough sleep.

Britons were the worst affected by lack of shuteye in a poll of 14,000 in 14 countries.

They also snooze well in China where only 11 per cent have a problem.

In the UK, women are more likely to nod off better than men, the survey by Aviva Health Insurance found.

Those aged 35 to 44 are worst affected, with more than half – 51 per cent – saying they don’t get the right amount of sleep.

In contrast, those aged 65 and over seem to be the best sleepers, with only 27 per cent feeling they don’t get the right amount of slumber.

One in three adults who are married say they don’t get the right amount of sleep, compared with nearly half – 45 per cent – of couples who co-habit.

Overall, UK adults with children appear to sleep more or less as well as those without children.
