FRAMPTON FIGHT OFF AFTER FOE’S FREAK FALL

- By JEFF POWELL Boxing Correspondent

CARL FRAMPTON’S attempt to relaunch his career tonight was derailed when his opponent Andres Gutierrez was injured in a freak accident last night. The Mexican released pictures showing he’d suffered two deep cuts to both his nose and chin as well as breaking two teeth after slipping and falling in the shower. Promoter Barry McGuigan said that Gutierrez had slipped in the shower and suffered concussion along with facial wounds. Speaking on BBC Newsline McGuigan said: ‘We’re all so disappointed, it was a freak accident. He slipped in the shower, smashed his face, the guy is concussed. He’s a deep gash on his chin, his nose, lost two of his teeth.’ It means Frampton’s Belfast homecoming will not take place tonight, leaving the 11,000 fans Open wound: Gutierrez posted a picture of his gashed chin who had bought tickets for the SSE Arena in Belfast with no fight to see. Organisers will attempt to reschedule the contest, but it will take weeks rather than days for the 24-year-old to recover. Frampton went to visit him, and told BBC Radio Northern Ireland: ‘I am disappointed and gutted. It is a freak accident. You can’t write things like this.’ Beating Gutierrez was planned as the first stage in setting up a comeback which would have brought a world featherweight title fight against Welsh IBF champion Lee Selby before Christmas.
