Scotland could have hit the Post in ’78 World Cup
IN A brilliant show of optimism before the 1978 World Cup, the Royal Mail designed special stamps to celebrate Scotland winning it. Unfortunately for the Tartan Army, Scotland crashed out at the group stage and the stamps were never released. But 39 years later, the designs can be viewed by appointment at the Postal Museum in London, which opened yesterday. Scotland were among the sides tipped for glory, mainly by their own fans, at the 1978 World Cup in Argentina but defeat by Peru and a draw with Iran scuppered their chances. A famous 3-2 win in the final group game against Holland was not quite sufficient for Ally McLeod’s side to progress.
