If the Cabinet doesn’t pull itself together, a Corbyn government could soon become a grotesque reality. Theresa May is back at her desk for the next two days. She needs to knock heads together – hard!
goVErnMEnT infighting over Brexit strategy continued yesterday, with an attack by International Trade Secretary Liam Fox on Chancellor philip Hammond.
Last week, Mr Hammond said the Cabinet was united on a proposal for a ‘transition period’ of up to three years after Britain leaves the EU in 2019, during which free movement would continue. dr Fox denied there was any such consensus, and said allowing free movement to go on for so long would ‘not keep faith’ with the referendum result. ‘Friends’ of Mr Hammond then told journalists dr Fox was ‘living in a fantasy land’.
When will ministers realise how badly this kind of puerile internal bickering plays with the public? If the Cabinet doesn’t pull itself together, a Corbyn government could soon become a grotesque reality.
Theresa May is back at her desk for the next two days before resuming her alpine holiday. She must take the opportunity to knock heads together – hard.
