City where it’s illegal to cross the road while on your mobile

-

YOU can’t walk down the street without passing a so- called ‘smartphone zombie’ too engrossed by their screen to watch where they are going.

Now one city has decided it’s time to take drastic action – making it illegal to cross the road while using a mobile in order to cut down on accidents.

Those caught using electronic devices, including tablets and cameras, at crossing points in Honolulu, Hawaii, could find themselves slapped with a fine of up to £75. The policy will be introduced from October, with council leaders saying it is necessary to tackle ‘distracted walking’.

Under the new system, a first offence will lead to a fine of £11 to £27, followed by one of up to £57 for a second violation and up to £75 for a third within a year.

Four out of ten Britons admit they have had a technology-related mishap, with 13 per cent having walked into someone or something while on their phone, a 2015 study for Accident Awareness Week found.
