EXPERT VERDICT: Corticotropin-releasing factor is a known cause of hair loss, says Tracy Keen, a consultant trichologist. ‘The main active ingredient in this product is a man-made version of a chemical the body produces and which blocks the effects of corticotropin-releasing factor in the hair follicle. However, evidence for using the astressin-B protein for hair regrowth is based on studies in animals where it was given as a food supplement or an injection — whether it can be absorbed through the skin and be effective is questionable. ‘Nevertheless, I gave this product to a patient who has temporary hair loss (due to stress) and after a few weeks of use, he said his condition isn’t getting worse. It may help some people to a limited extent, but there are no trials to prove long-term benefits.’
