MORE than 60 per cent of elderly people living in care homes have never had a single visitor. Social isolation is one of the worst side effects of ageing and has an enormous impact on health, wellbeing and even life expectancy. Based on a revolutionary project in the U.S., this two-part series (concluding tomorrow) follows an experiment in which ten four-year-olds spend six weeks visiting 11 pensioners in a retirement village. Will interacting with these non-judgmental, funloving children give the elderly residents (such as Michael and Pat, pictured with Noah and Millie) a new lease of life?
