RoRy McIlRoy has sacked his caddie JP Fitzgerald — just 11 days after crediting Fitzgerald with transforming his fortunes at The open. The former world No 1 will confirm today that he has ended a nine-year working relationship that began when he was ranked 200. He is expected to ask close friend Harry Diamond to step in for this week’s Bridgestone Invitational and the USPGA next week. McIlroy was five over par after just six holes in the first round at Royal Birkdale when Fitzgerald took him to one side and said: ‘you’re Rory McIlroy, what the f*** are you doing?’ The golfer said the tirade helped him rescue his performance, but it hasn’t rescued the caddie from being shown the door.
