HOW TRIGGER HIT HEIGHTS

- MARCUS TOWNEND

RON HUGGINS, who owned great stayer Double Trigger, will be at the track today to see if Big Orange can land his third Goodwood Cup. Double Trigger memorably beat his brother Double Eclipse, also trained by Mark Johnston and part-owned by Huggins, to land his first Goodwood Cup in 1995 before beating Classic Cliche in 1997 and Canon Can in 1998. Huggins said: ‘I have had some good horses since but Trigger was special because he had such a following. He always tried his heart out. ‘He won three Goodwood Cups, three Doncaster Cups and, while he won the Ascot Gold Cup, people often forget he was second twice as well. ‘I remember after his third Goodwood Cup win, everybody rushed back to the winners’ enclosure, I have never seen anything like it.’ Now aged 26, stallion Double Trigger has retired from his stud duties but Huggins owns his last daughter, three-year-old Double Encore, who is about to enter training with Alex Honeyball.
