Chalobah in frame for England call-up

- By SAMI MOKBEL

WATFORD midfielder Nathaniel Chalobah is in line to be promoted to the full England set-up by manager Gareth Southgate.

Sportsmail understands the England boss is a huge fan of the 22-year-old, who this summer left Chelsea in search of regular first-team football. It remains to be seen whether Chalobah will receive his first call-up for the World Cup qualifying double-header against Malta and Slovakia next month. But, performances permitting, Chalobah can expect a senior call-up sooner rather than later. The England manager bemoaned his lack of midfield options after the 2-2 draw against Scotland in June, though the return to fitness of Jordan Henderson will come as a huge boost. Tottenham’s Harry Winks is another midfielder admired by Southgate, who will warn his players they have to be playing regularly to make his squad for next summer’s World Cup in Russia. The stance leaves players such as Manchester City’s John Stones, Arsenal’s Alex OxladeChamberlain, Liverpool’s Daniel Sturridge and Manchester United’s Luke Shaw facing transfer dilemmas going into the new season. Southgate has already shown he is prepared to axe players from his squad who are not playing regularly — former captain Wayne Rooney was omitted due to his lack of action at Manchester United last season.
