PAULA JOY AS HER RECORD REMAINS

- RIATH AL-SAMARRAI

EUROPEAN ATHLETICS have ‘seen sense’ by scrapping their plans to wipe out world records set before 2005, says Paula Radcliffe. Radcliffe reacted angrily when the proposals were suggested in May — the idea would see her marathon mark of 2hr 15min 25sec, set in 2003, erased. But EA president Svein Arne Hansen now wants to push back the cut-off date to 1991, when out-of-competition testing started, which would preserve Radcliffe’s record, as well as Jonathan Edwards’s 1995 triple jump record. Hansen said: ‘We have to listen to people like Paula.’ Radcliffe added: ‘I’m glad European Athletics have seen sense.’
