Hi ho for the silver screen’s heyday

- I. G. Fenner, New Milton, Hants.

Going to the pictures When I was just a kid, On Saturdays from ten till noon Was what we youngsters did. We all loved Stan and Ollie, Mickey Mouse and Peter Pan, Mother Riley, the Three Stooges, And (my favourite) Superman. We booed at all the baddies As we shouted out: ‘Bang! Bang!’ And we roared with childish laughter At the antics of Our Gang. Gene Autry and Roy Rogers, Cowboy heroes of the day, As they rode along the sunset trail While singing all the way. Back then it was good, wholesome fun, A golden era when There wasn’t any violence, No sex or swearing then. But war broke out and suddenly That innocence was gone, Our dads went off to fight And life was different from then on. But still I have those memories, Which I treasure to this day, Saturday mornings at the pictures — They can’t take that away!
