Canada blow for Andy

- By MIKE DICKSON Tennis Correspondent

ANDY MURRAY has pulled out of next week’s Canadian Open and looks likely to relinquish the world No 1 spot. The 30-year-old Scot has been struggling with a hip injury but could return at the Cincinnati Masters or the US Open. He said: ‘I am sad to be missing the tournament in Montreal because I have many great memories from my time in Canada. I am doing everything I can to return as quickly as possible.’ Now Rafael Nadal needs only to reach the Montreal semifinals to end Murray’s reign. Wimbledon champion Roger Federer, who has confirmed his presence in Canada, also has a realistic chance of returning to the world No 1 spot. Stan Wawrinka and Marin Cilic have also pulled out of the Montreal event.
