Blue eyeliner banned from her wedding!

-

Diana’s make-up for her wedding on July 29, 1981, was a symphony in soft apricot and peach tones — absolutely no blue liner — and it suited her age perfectly.

The person responsible was Barbara Daly, a well-known name in the world of cosmetics and a former make-up artist at the BBC, recommended to Diana by Vogue’s beauty editor Felicity Clark.

‘a few months before the wedding, i went to her apartment at Buckingham Palace,’ says Barbara. ‘she was very welcoming. she and i are the same size and she looked at me and said: “it’s not often i can look a woman straight in the eye” — and we both cracked up.

‘at the time, she wasn’t using a lot of make-up from day to day. she was only 19, and i didn’t want her to look like a model. she was beautiful, so it just needed to be the icing on the cake.’

On the day itself, Barbara arrived at 6.30am with a suitcase of products. she applied concealer, powder, blusher and mascara. ‘it had to be enough because there were a lot of lights, a lot of TV cameras, everybody looking at her — but on the other hand this was not some Hollywood starlet. i certainly didn’t want to give her the kind of look that would overwhelm her.’

The whole thing took around 45 minutes. Barbara then did touch-ups before the photographs at Buckingham Palace — including a dab of powder on Prince Charles’s shiny forehead.
