...but if you’ve opted for a staycation, get set for a month’s rain in two days

- By Richard Marsden

SOGGY conditions will continue to hit Britons on their summer staycations – as more than a month’s rain is set to fall over just two days.

Warnings of ‘torrential downpours’ and possible flash flooding have been issued by the Meteorological Office for today and tomorrow.

Forecasters predict up to 1.6ins could fall in some areas each day. The August average for England is 2.7ins.

It comes three weeks after flash floods hit 50 homes in the Cornish village of Coverack, which was deluged by four inches of rain in two hours on July 19.

Today’s warnings cover London, the whole of south east England, East Anglia and part of the East Midlands, between 11am and 9pm. ‘Heavy, slow-moving and perhaps thundery rain’ is forecast – with some areas receiving ‘torrential downpours’ lasting two to three hours, the Met Office says. However, the rain will be patchy and while many places are set to be drenched, others will remain dry.

The same areas are set to receive more persistent heavy rain all day tomorrow. The Met Office warns: ‘Some transport routes may be affected by localised flooding. In addition, localised flooding of homes and businesses is possible.’

Further north and west, there will be sunshine and scattered showers today and a largely dry day tomorrow.
