England’s revival eclipses Swedes

-

It DOESN’t seem that long since we were praising the Swedish model with regard to women’s golf — and no wonder.

the Solheim Cup team was full of Scandinavian players every two years, when our own system of encouraging young girls to take up the game was so poor.

Now look at what has happened. No fewer than five of the team who will take on the Americans next week are English, and all of them qualified by right.

there are four Scandinavians in the team and three of them had to rely on a wildcard from Swedish captain Annika Sorenstam.

None of the English quintet is over 30, either, with Charley Hull and promising rookie Georgia Hall just 21. they will join 28-year- old Florentyna Parker and Mel Reid and Jodi Ewart Shadoff, who are both 29.

If the Swedes are wondering, the English model is run by England Golf — for both men and women — and is proving one of the nation’s great sports breeding grounds.
