Jan Ravens: Difficult Woman (Gilded Balloon, Teviot) Verdict: Brilliant impressionist
IF YOU don’t know Jan Ravens from R4’s Dead Ringers, you’re in for a treat.
She’s the best reason for Theresa May to remain PM — mercilessly spoofing her quivering diction. She also takes aim at other politicos, from eyeball-rolling Diane Abbott to Scotland’s ‘wee three’: Sturgeon, Davidson and Dugdale. Just as priceless is her squeaking Hilary Mantel, and Joanna Lumley, enjoying a day trip to Mosul. Perhaps her best turn, though, is a satirical ditty sung a la Victoria Wood.
I could have done without some of the linking material (Springsteen fantasies and the menopause). But these are quibbles in a virtuoso act that is sure to sell out here, and will hopefully run and run on radio.
