THE BBC PROMS 2017 (RADIO 3, 7.30PM) continue with John Wilson (pictured) conducting his orchestra in a semi-staged performance of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s big-hearted musical Oklahoma!. AT THE beginning of 1937, the genius composer George Gershwin was tormented by terrible headaches and the smell of burning rubber. It was thought that the hardworking Gershwin was suffering from a breakdown, but in fact, he had a fatal brain tumour and died in the summer of that year.
