It’s cup draw chaos (again)
Salako calls wrong home teams
JOHN SALAKO brought chaos to the second round draw of the Carabao Cup last night by drawing out teams at the incorrect venues in an embarrassing live television mix-up.
Before the draw on Sky Sports News, presenter Julian Warren made it clear that: ‘ a red ball denotes a home tie, a white ball denotes an away tie’ — but Salako failed to understand his instructions.
The first four matches for the renamed League Cup were all listed in the incorrect order, with home draws named as away fixtures and away draws called as being home ties.
Former Crystal Palace winger Salako started by pulling out Brentford’s No 2 ball, followed by a white ball — to signal they would be playing away — but then called out ‘home’.
His mistakes continued for the next three draws before the former Crystal Palace man realised his error and Warren was later forced to clarify the rules to him.
After a delay, EFL chiefs confirmed the fixtures at their correct venues, deciding against re - drawing second- round ties as the draw ‘ was not compromised’.
The mix- up follows last month’s farce, when a graphic from the first-round draw was released with Charlton drawing two opponents.
Meanwhile, Sunderland won their first tie under Simon Grayson last night, setting up a second round clash against Carlisle by beating Bury 1-0. Midfielder George Honeyman, 22, scored the goal.
