Oldest man in the world dies aged 113

-

THE world’s oldest man died yesterday aged 113 – a month before his 114th birthday.

Auschwitz survivor Yisrael Kristal leaves two children, nine grandchildren and 32 great-grandchildren.

Mr Kristal was born in Poland on September 15, 1903 – three months before the Wright brothers’ first successful powered airplane flight.

He went on to work in the family confectionary factory – but under Nazi occupation he was sent to Auschwitz where his wife and two of his children died. After the war he moved to Israel and opened a sweet shop.

Guinness World Records recognised him as the world’s oldest man in March last year. Mr Kristal said about his longevity at the time that ‘everything is determined from above’. Britain’s oldest man is Robert Weighton, from Hampshire, who was 109 in March.
