Muntjac, the barking deer
The species is rare in Scotland, where landowners see them as a pest and shoot them
But it’s illegal to kill muntjac unless you have a licensed rifle and it’s on your land
It is known as the ‘barking deer’ because of its loud, fox-like cry
Female muntjacs have three offspring every two years and are pregnant for most of their 15-year lives
The creature was almost killed off during the harsh winter of 1963, when most froze or starved to death and their numbers plunged to 2,000
Muntjacs are blamed for falling numbers of nightingales as they destroys the thickets where the birds nest
