THE Mensasanctioned contest t to find Britain’s brightest child returns, airing nightly this week. Of the hundreds who applied, just 20 exceptional eight- to 12-year-olds are in the running for this year’s title. Though popular, previous series have drawn accusations of exploitation, but the fact is that not all children are shrinking violets; those featured are generally on the precocious side, happy to take centre-stage. Asking the questions,questions gentlegent giant Richard Osman is so encouraging that they’re never made to feel they’ve done badly. Yes, there are some pushy parents cheering from the stalls, but at least they’re nurturing their children’s intellectual development — surely no bad thing at a time when so many leave that to a computer screen.
MODERN LIFE Britain’s Relationship Secrets With Anne Robinson, 9pm, BBC1
IN THIS first of four new episodes Anne Robinson — after her fascinating look at our spending habits in 2015 — returns to ask more probing questions of the nation. And this time, she’s trying to find out what makes a happy relationship. In the process of meeting five very different couples from around the UK, it doesn’t take her long to discover that it’s a question with more than one answer.
