Jo Cox George Medal hero dies

-

THE man who tried to save MP Jo Cox from her murderer has died.

Former miner Bernard Kenny, 79, was stabbed in the stomach when he intervened as Right-wing extremist Thomas Mair attacked Mrs Cox in his village of Birstall, West Yorkshire, in June last year.

The knife pierced his liver, and he had to go undergo surgery

Last night his son Phil Kenny, 5 , confirmed that Mr Kenny had died on Monday morning.

In June, Mr Kenny was awarded the George Medal for his bravery, and in a statement said he was ‘honoured to receive such an award’.

He was included in a list of new awards along with the two West Yorkshire Police officers who arrested Mair, who both received the Queen’s Gallantry Medal.

There were numerous calls after Mrs Cox’s murder for Mr Kenny to be honoured by the nation, including a petition aimed at securing him the George Cross – the highest possible civilian honour.
