Clubs to set earlier transfer deadline

- By MATT BARLOW

PreMier LeAgue clubs are preparing to enforce their own transfer deadline next summer before the season starts.

the proposal is on the agenda for next month’s meeting of chairmen, with most of the 20 clubs expected to back the idea.

Many managers have spoken out in support of such a change to bring clarity to their preparations. Paul Clement is fighting to keep gylfi sigurdsson at swansea amid interest from everton and there are more than two weeks before the August 31 deadline.

‘if the window is shut before the season starts we can get on with the football,’ said Clement. ‘the vast majority of clubs are in favour. it could happen next year.’

Any such agreement would stop sides signing players after their self-imposed deadline, but clubs in other countries would still be able to buy Premier League stars.
