5 WAYS TO BANISH BAD BREATH

Dental surgeon Uchenna Okoye from london Smiling gives her top tips for sweetsmell­ing breath.

CB1 spray (£4.99 for 15ml). Contains zinc acetate and chlorhexid­ine, which react with the volatile sulphur compounds (VSCs) that make breath smell, to eliminate bad breath. Dr Okoye says: ‘Hydrogen sulphide is the key culprit of smelly breath. Therefore, anything that helps to neutralise it is an asset.’

ULTRADEX Daily Oral rinse (£3. 5 for 100ml). Active ingredient­s such as stabilised chlorine dioxide eliminate the VSCs that cause bad breath and claim to be effective for up to 1 hours. Dr Okoye says: ‘This is the only product I have found that gets rid of garlic breath.’

ORABRUSH Tongue Scraper Ultra Soft (£3.90, available from Boots). The bristles reach into the crevices of the tongue, releasing foul-smelling bacteria. Dr Okoye says: ‘Scrapers are a key element in the fight against bad breath, as the tongue provides a hiding place for bacteria.’ PHILIPS Sonicare Airfloss Pro Power Flosser HX847 (£74.99, from Argos, pictured below). Jets of pressurise­d air and water blow away plaque, bacteria and food debris that can lead to bad breath. Dr Okoye says: ‘All air flossers can be helpful for dislodging debris caught between the teeth, but you need to use it with tooth brushing, not instead of.’ TEPE Interdenta­l Brushes (from £3 per pack). These clean more surface than regular brushing, and reach beneath the gum to remove food and debris. Dr Okoye says: ‘I recommend these to all my clients and they are great if you don’t like flossing.’
